To be a critical resource for Maui and Hawai’i that supports and sustains a diverse, informed and engaged community through professional, fact-based journalism, empowering people to find solutions that make our home a better place.

Our stories aim to start conversations on critical issues and equip readers with the information they need to make a difference in their communities. As local news outlets scale back and residents worry their voices will get pushed out by bigger outside interests, we want people to feel like they still have a say in the things that happen and stay motivated as participants in our democracy and society. The more involved the members of our community are, the better we will all be for it.

HJI envisions a media enterprise with a team of journalists that will grow to include reporters, editors, multimedia producers, supporting technology and business staff. The local news market in Hawai’i, particularly on Maui, is disappearing, creating a local news desert. HJI’s goal is to fill that gap by providing engaging and compelling journalism that showcases the issues impacting everyday people, from the lack of housing and cost of living to Native Hawaiian culture and rights, local sports, government and politics, social services, climate, business and tourism. HJI aims to start the conversations that lead to solutions.
Be a part of the movement to rebuild local news on Maui. Sharing our mission amplifies our collective voice for change.
HJI is a Maui-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to solving critical issues through local journalism. All donations and support for HJI will be used to support its mission. EIN 88-0542594
