The Hawai‘i Journalism Initiative is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded to bring in-depth, nonpartisan, fact-based local reporting to Maui and Hawai’i. We believe deeply in the importance of local journalists embedded in our communities to provide news that matters to the residents of Maui.
Maui County has become a “news desert” and is in desperate need of important coverage about farming, tourism, healthcare, the economy and the environment.Lee Imada

Local news on Maui has been decimated over the past decade. Many Maui news organizations are either shutting down completely, or currently run off of skeleton staffing levels that cannot deliver the necessary local news to our community. We are seeking to rebuild the local news industry on Maui to help stoke civic discourse and make community members feel heard and involved in the search for solutions to major issues.
Our goal is to create a vibrant, strong, trustworthy and sustainable news organization to fulfill our mission. We will dissect our biggest challenges and look for solutions to help make Maui a better place to live.
Be a part of the movement to rebuild local news on Maui. Sharing our mission amplifies our collective voice for change.
HJI is a Maui-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to solving critical issues through local journalism. All donations and support for HJI will be used to support its mission.
