Who
We Are:

The Hawaii Journalism Initiative is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded to bring non-partisan, truth-based local journalism to Maui and Hawaii. We are committed to providing local news to the residents of Maui to create a more informed and engaged local community.

Maui County has become a “news desert” and is in desperate need of important coverage about farming, tourism, healthcare, the economy and the environment. Lee ImadaMaui Editor and Journalist

Committed to Restoring the Voice of the Island

Local news on Maui has been decimated in the past ten years. Many Maui news organizations are either shutting down completely, or currently run off of skeleton staffing levels that cannot deliver the necessary local news to our community. We are seeking to re-build the local news industry on Maui to help improve our community and make everyone more prosperous.

Our Goals & Values

Our goal is to create a vibrant, strong, trustworthy, and sustainable news organization to fulfill our mission. We will dissect our biggest challenges and are looking for solutions to help make Maui a better place to live.

  • We believe a healthy community is an informed community
  • We believe Maui is a special place that deserves to be protected for future generations
  • We believe in reporting the facts, regardless of the costs, sacrifices or work required to discover the truth and report it to our community
  • We believe an experienced and locally-based team is critical to properly serve our community through professional journalism
