Promoting Civic Engagement in the Aloha State

We envision a Hawai’i where every resident is empowered with the civic information they need to become full participants in our democracy and society.

Through donor support, HJI’s nonprofit structure will allow more money to go directly to the journalists, without the high overhead needed for traditional newspaper outlets.
The Hawai‘i Journalism Initiative is dedicated to supporting locally based journalists, giving them the financial support to create quality, in-depth coverage on local issues affecting our community.
Local funding ensures HJI is focused on topics that keep citizens engaged with unbiased, hyper-local content.
