The Hawai‘i Journalism Initiative is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Our mission is to be a critical resource for Maui and Hawai’i that supports and sustains a diverse, informed and engaged community through professional local journalism and media programming.

We believe we have the experience, the commitment and leadership to become that critical news source that supports and sustains a healthy and informed democracy here on Maui and throughout Hawai‘i.Chuck Bergson
Chairman, Hawai‘i Journalism Initiative
Maui County is facing a critical information crisis. The decline of traditional newspapers has left a void where misinformation thrives, and civic engagement suffers. The Hawai`i Journalism Initiative was founded to fill this gap.
We are not just a website; we are a civic infrastructure project. From top to bottom, our leadership and staff are Maui residents. We live here. We work here. We know our community and how we’re at a critical crossroads.

Our people, culture and precious resources need to be protected. Locally based journalists bring facts and accountability to light for a brighter future.Jack DuganDirector, Hawai‘i Journalism Initiative
In just our first 18 months, we have proven the demand for fact-based reporting is massive:
Where does your money go? Your contribution directly funds the salaries of veteran local journalists living and working right here in Maui. It allows us to remain independent, objective, and beholden only to the truth.
Be a part of the movement to rebuild local news on Maui. Sharing our mission amplifies our collective voice for change.
HJI is a Maui-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to solving critical issues through local journalism. All donations and support for HJI will be used to support its mission. EIN 88-0542594
